Happy hump day my loyal blogger fam, how is your week going so far? Did you enjoy your long weekend? I was a little under the weather this weekend and yesterday so my week is just actually starting out today. I am not going to complain about a short work week though. I do keep mixing up my days though!
As I mentioned in my sneak peek on Instagram last week, this post is pretty exciting because it features a new brand – Unique Vintage! I am so excited to finally be able to share them here on the blog with you as I have been a fan of their clothes since before I started blogging. So why did it take me so long you ask? Because until recently, their sizing ran super small and a 4x would only fit an 18/20.
My friend Stef carries some of their styles in her boutique SexyPlus Clothing and I have always been so disappointed that nothing fit me. I was doing some kind of research/shopping over the Christmas break and it landed me on Unique Vintage’s website and when I started looking I noticed that their sizing had changed. Their new inclusive size range goes from XS to 5x or size 2 to 26. And I was pleasantly surprised when I checked out the new size chart and saw that it was a true plus size fit.
I reached out to the brand to see if they wanted to collaborate with me so I could spread the word and put the new sizing to the test. I mean I have to look out for all my babes and in particular my size 24 and up ladies! So while Unique Vintage sent me these looks to review, all opinions are as always my own.
It’s no surprise that I love outfits with a vintage vibe, they are such a perfect reflection of my girly, feminine aesthetic. And the retro styles really work well with my body type. I also love that they carry an amazing selection of accessories including shoes, purses, petticoats, jewelry, beauty products, hats, sunglasses etc. My one complaint in this area is please start offering wide width shoes. I absolutely love their shoe collection but they currently are not available in wide widths.
Right now you should keep in mind that not all product that is on the website is manufactured under the new size chart so make sure you read the product descriptions and individual size charts carefully. I found their product descriptions to be really detailed and helpful when ordering. And you will note on the website that there is a separate section to shop plus sizes.
When I try a new brand I like to try a few different items at once so I can get a more accurate feel of their sizing and how different fabrics and silhouettes may impact the fit. They do have a great selection of fitted body con dresses and pants but given that the 5x is technically a size 26 I wanted to proceed with caution my first time around as I really do consider myself a solid 28 in bottoms.
And for all my Canadian and international babes you will be happy to hear that Unique Vintage ships internationally, and that gets a huge thumbs up from me! The only thing to watch for here is that all items may not necessarily be available for international shipping which can be common for some brands. It depends on whether they have limitations on export for certain items. See this is where my accounting knowledge comes in handy!
“Living Coral” is the Pantone colour of the year for 2019 and I know a lot of people were disappointed with this choice but I was pretty happy about it. I love a good shade of coral, its such a fun and vibrant colour. Unique Vintage decided to partner with Pantone and create a special collection to celebrate “Living Coral”. As soon as I saw this collection I knew that I had to have a piece from it. And before anyone gets made at me I will put a disclaimer out right now that this only ships to the US. I wanted it so bad that I had it shipped to my US address. Sorry!
But not to worry because this top comes in a rainbow of colours as does the skirt. I can’t resist a good gingham print, call me a table cloth because I don’t really care lol. This is my favourite kind of skirt, a classic swing skirt with a high waist. The fabric is lightweight and has lots of volume and it even has pockets. I love that the waistband is clean and thick. When deciding what size to order, make sure you measure your high waist, below your bust so that you get a proper fit. I am wearing the size 5x and I thought the fit was perfect. As you can see I even had enough room for the petticoat.
Petticoats are something that you have to purchase separately and they are a one size fits all. Whenever I see one size fits all you know I have to put it to the test lol. I was very pleased with the fit considering it is one size fits all. My butt was giving me a little bit of grief but that is pretty common for me. I chose to play off the colour theme with the coral but if you wanted to invest in a petticoat that was more versatile you could easily get a white one. The skirt looks great with and without one, I think it depends on your personality, your style and maybe what event you are wearing the outfit too. I could easily wear this outfit to the office without the petticoat.
Now let’s talk about this shirt – I think I am officially in love and I need it in multiple colours. This is affectionately known as the Frenchie Top and it is made of a thick stretch knit fabric and it has silicone gel along the top seam to help keep the neckline in place. What I especially love about this shirt is you can wear it off or on the shoulder making it a versatile piece for your wardrobe. And since I prefer to wear a regular bra, I wore it on my shoulder.
This top is definitely designed for an hour glass shape so while it has stretch if you carry more weight in your stomach you may want to consider sizing up. I am wearing the 5x in this as well and I loved the sleek clean line it gave me. The ruffle detail gives it a dash of spice and a hint of sass.
The next item that I took for a spin was this black wildflower print 1950’s style dress. It has the classic fit and flare silhouette shape that I love as it draws attention to my waist. I love the print, I felt it has a more winter/fall vibe to it and you have lots of different options when it comes to accessorizing. It has a v-neck in both the front and back, short sleeves and a super cute rosette detail at the waist.
I am wearing the 5x in this dress and my only complaint is that it is a little snug at the base of the sleeve. What I would do to solve this problem is have a small vent inserted in the hem of the sleeve to give me the little extra room I needed. Otherwise this dress fit perfectly. I decided to accessorize this look with some bold colours with these yellow suede flats from ModCloth, green fringe earrings from Aldo and this cute heart shaped clutch from Torrid. I loved the pop of the bold primary colours against the black.
For this final look I couldn’t think of a more classic retro vintage inspired print than navy and white polka dots. Out of all 3 looks this dress is my favourite because the fit on this dress is impeccable. The fabric of this dress has more stretch to it so the sleeves were perfect and I just loved the volume of the skirt and the twirl factor. The low cut v neckline with the built in white faux cami is sexy but not too revealing. And it ties in so well with the white band in the skirt and sleeves and even the button details. I am wearing the 5x. To make this dress my own I decided to pair it with a touch of the unexpected – coral accents. Adding the coral petticoat, shoes and bag added a punch of colour that is totally me. And navy and coral look great together I think.
Overall, I am really impressed with the new sizing that Unique Vintage has to offer and that I finally get to wear their amazing clothes after all this time! If you are a size 28 I would definitely give them a try, I think the size 5x is more of a 26/28. So which look is your fave? Do you want me to try some other styles – maybe a bodycon and pants?
