Happy Wednesday everyone, I hope you are having a great week!
Today’s post is the last of my three part series inspired by the movie Grease.
My inspiration for this look comes from the end of the movie where Sandy has decided it’s time to change her look up and takes on that “bad girl” persona that she thinks Danny will love. What I love about this movie is in the end they realize that neither one of them needs to totally change who they are to make each other happy, that there is a happy medium that will work, what’s important is staying true to who you are as a person.
I relate to this because I think as a society we feel the need to conform and fit in, we care what others think about us. And let’s be honest, feeling like an outsider is never really much fun, especially in our impressionable teenage and young adult years.
I held myself back from many things living with the notion that being thin was the answer to all of life’s challenges. When I look back now I am disappointed at how obsessive I was about it. But I also realize that at the time I didn’t have the inner strength to tell myself that I was good enough exactly how I was.
And you know what, there is nothing wrong with wanting to self improve, whether that be losing weight, getting more active, quitting smoking, changing careers or going back to school. But just because you feel that there is opportunity to create a different (not better) version of yourself doesn’t mean that the person you are right at this moment doesn’t deserve to feel a sense of self worth and acceptance.
In fact, I strongly believe that if you are in a place of self love and acceptance now, that you will have the strength and courage to make the changes or improvements you so desire.
OK so now let’s talk about this look. Believe it or not I put this together from existing pieces that I already had in my wardrobe. Ladies shop your closet! I think you will be pleasantly surprised what you may find hiding in the back corner. And yes, I know my closet is big but we all have items we can repurpose.
To create my interpretation of Sandy’s bad girl look from Grease the outfit had to be all black of course but you know I couldn’t help but add a little bit of Lisa.
These are my black moto vegan faux leather pants from the first Melissa McCarthy Seven collection from Penningtons. I love the fit of these pants and the sleek line and texture were perfect for the look I was going for. These pants are still available on www.melissamccarthy.com in select sizes and they are on sale!
I am wearing the same Torrid Faux Leather Jacket from the 2nd post in this series. I love the versatility of this piece and the back of this jacket is super special. And yes I am sorry this jacket is no longer available but I did provide links for some great alternatives.
I then added this baby doll tank also from Torrid. I love that it had some black on black sequins at the waist band to bring some sparkle and shine and the neckline is different and fun. Torrid has an extensive collection of black tops that would be perfect to recreate this look. I provided links to a few of my favourites.
So I have to admit I was feeling particularly bad ass when I put this look together but no outfit of mine is complete without the perfect accessories. And if I was going to explore my inner bad girl they needed to be extra special.
That meant that I had to brave wearing my favourite peep toe heels, god I wish I could actually wear heels out because they certainly make your legs look fantastic! For all my ladies who can rock them, I am totally jealous!!!!
I also decided to go with gold jewelry and the main event in this look is this stunning gold body chain by one of my fave indie designers, bloggers and plus size community leaders, Alysse Dalessandro of the brand Ready to Stare. This is my first body chain and a piece that is outside my normal taste but once I put it on I was in love. And it is so versatile. I love that you can get this in size Small to 5X.
The other fabulous piece in this outfit is this one of a kind custom clutch designed by Cameo Phillips of Cameo de Bore. My blogger boo Thera introduced me to this fantastic page on Instagram and I immediately fell in love with the entire line and the uniqueness of these pieces. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.
Cameo likes to put teasers of special bags up on her Instagram page and when I saw this one I knew I had to have it. This is the “Pink Charmed” clutch. I love the combination of the pink leather with the black calf skin and the bead work is absolutely to die for. If you are looking for a piece that is sophisticated and fun be sure to check them out. And I personally love her hashtag – join the lady like movement!
So there you have it, my walk as a bad girl was complete. While this is not my normal every day look I really enjoyed doing something out of the box and exploring where my sense of style would take me. My message to you – don’t sell yourself short, don’t be afraid to take risks and don’t be afraid to be you or a slightly different version of you when you feel like it. What do you have to lose? – Nothing! But what do you have to gain? – EVERYTHING!
Amazing photos are thanks to Robert of Robert Skuja Photography. Thank you for making magic the night we shot this!
Special thanks to my boo Thera of the blog Cloud 14+ for the gorgeous hair and make up.
