Happy Thursday everyone! Well it may be March but the snow sure was flying in Southern Ontario the last couple of days.
This post is all about unexpected colour combinations. While I am a lover of colour and prints, I wouldn’t say that I was always super adventurous when it came to trying new combinations and I am still definitely a print mixing beginner. But as my confidence grew over the last few years, my sense of adventure got bigger and I started taking more risks.
My love of accessories was the inspiration behind this look and colour combination.
I purchased this gorgeous mustard yellow dress from Zelie for She when she was having her winter clearance sale. It is the same silhouette as the pink Hibiscus dress that I bought last year as a swimsuit cover up.
I love the flowy breezy feel of this dress and the sexy low cut front with the racer back. It’s made of a great light weight fabric and this version isn’t see through so it is perfect just on it’s own. This dress is a one size fits all and even though I am a size 28, I found that I have a tonne of room in this piece.
When I got the dress in the mail and tried it on, I was in love with the colour and knew I wanted to do something outside of the box, I just didn’t want to pair it with black or some other neutral. I often sit and look at what I have hanging in my various closets to provide me with inspiration but I have to admit, nothing was doing it for me.
Then, one day, I went into my front hall closet to look for a specific jacket and I came across one of my spring scarfs tied around a purple faux leather jacket that I actually had never worn yet. The scarf is a beautiful floral print and it had mustard and purple in it. I realized that the jacket would like great with this dress and give it that edgy boho vibe.
The jacket is from Penningtons from last spring and I am wearing the size 26. I immediately fell in love with the colour as purple is my favourite when it came out last February and I let that override my practical side which knows that I can’t wear a jacket in warmer weather!
But it is a great alternative for fall and it was the perfect weight for me the day we did this shoot. And with coloured jackets being so popular nowadays, I went for it.
Once I get an idea in my head, the wheels start to turn and I then remembered this fabulous necklace I had just picked up from Your Big Sister’s Closet located here in Toronto. Karen always manages to find the best accessories that fit us plus size gals in addition to her fab clothing choices. And you can’t beat the price for a statement necklace – only $24. Unfortunately the accessories are only available in store but they are definitely worth the visit if you are in the area.
I also wanted a little bit of extra coverage for the girls so I added a bralette from Torrid in the same amazing shade of purple. If you have not yet tried a bralette, you need to! I have fallen in love with them as a great alternative to a cami. so much more comfortable and less bulky. I like the little touch of lace adding a feminine feel to the look.
I chose not to belt the dress because I just wanted to feel free and comfortable. If you wanted to define your waist more, just go ahead and belt it.
I also went out on a limb and paired this look with my Coach purple metallic leather tote. This purse changes to so many different colours and patterns in the light that I ended up being so happy with how it played off the dress. I of course had to add my white fur Michael Kors poof for some added fun. I then added a pair of plain black booties to complete the look.
It was a cold winter day with just a dusting of snow on the ground that was the perfect background for shooting this look. This dress makes you feel like a goddess, it hugs you in all the right places and has that wow element.
So I think now all I need is a crown or a super power? Don’t snow goddesses get something like that, lol?
Thanks to Stef of the blog Sassy Plus for choosing the setting and capturing this look with these beautiful images.
