Today’s post is the first in a 3 part series highlighting my recent visit to a local boutique, SexyPlus Clothing located in Mississauga Ontario.
On my continuing quest for alternative shopping options, I came across SexyPlus Clothing’s website and had always wanted to make a visit but living in Burlington had never made the time to actually go in to Mississauga.
I had been following the boutique on Instagram and last fall I had the opportunity to meet the boutique’s owner, Stefanie Augusteijn at an industry event. Stefanie is one of the nicest, sweetest and passionate women I have ever met. She puts her heart and soul into her boutique and is truly looking to help make her customers love the skin they are in and help move the plus size clothing industry forward.
As a CPA, CA, I work with entrepreneurs and small business owners every day and I know how hard it is to make a business successful and the sacrifices that are often made. Stefanie is no exception.
So while I feel it is important to support local business and to shop independent boutiques like SexyPlus Clothing, I have to admit that it can also be somewhat intimidating. As a size 28, I have often wondered if boutiques will have anything in my size. And let’s be honest, there is nothing worse than going to any store, never mind a plus size store and feeling like nothing will fit. When you have grown up with the stigma of only being able to shop in certain stores to begin with, overcoming this fear can be a daunting task.
Having had the opportunity to connect with Stefanie over the last few months, I decided to take an afternoon and see what the store had to offer. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! The boutique is not located in your typical retail location but it is a hidden gem tucked away in an unassuming location. But immediately when you walk inside you get the sense of a warm and inviting space filled with delicious girliness! With its pink and black accents, comfortable seating area, spacious dressing rooms complete with robes and slippers, it is definitely a place I could hang out. And then there are the racks of beautiful clothes and accessories on display. What more could a girl want?
SexyPlus is known for its great selection of special occasion and cocktail dresses but it has recently started offering an affordable casual line as well. For my visit, I let Stefanie guide me through the store and show me the options that were available in my size and other pieces she thought would fit. I was impressed with the number of options that were available to me. What impressed me even more, were the number of items that maybe only went to a 3x that fit! They were well made pieces with quality fabrics and a generous fit, a true plus size woman’s fit.
This first look that I am highlighting is this gorgeous Zen Collection: Goddess Plus Size Maxi in Ocean Tie Dye. I am wearing the 3x.
This dress is made of a gorgeous jersey fabric that falls beautifully and has nice little extra details that I tend to be drawn to such as the twisted straps, the wide waistband, and the cute little pin detail on the back.
My accessories are also from SexyPlus. They carry a great variety of options including their new interchangeable disc line where you can change the disc on your necklace, bracelet or ring to coordinate with your outfit. There were so many choices it was hard to choose!
And I was impressed that the bracelets are a generous size so they fit my plus size wrist and many are adjustable.
I happened to have this amazing Jeanne Beker white floppy hat that I had just purchased in my car and decided it would be the perfect “je ne sais quoi” for this look. It is great because it comes with three different scarves to coordinate with many different outfits. I imagined myself spending a fabulous afternoon in Niagara-on-the-Lake having afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales.
